Francis Drake Mitchell — the owner of a real estate office, general store and hotel — started a “Watch Bayocean Grow” campaign. It was later spoofed as ‘Watch Bayocean G O.’ Image sourced from opb.org.

A friend who lives in the States recently sent me this story of Bayocean, Oregon. It’s worth a watch.

It’s a story of urban development, the life stages of a town, and the contribution of people and their decisions to the character, and prosperity of that place.

Especially notable is the story of FD Mitchell who believed in an impossible dream. The dream was so grand and glorious that it surely inspired many. It was a compelling vision, originally conceived not by him but by the developers, who later abandoned it.

If nature had not taken over, would Mitchell, and the town of Bayocean, have prospered?

If the developers had done better research groundwork, for example finding out about the history of that land, would Mitchell have bought in to that vision in the first place?

Nature did however take over, and the challenges which Mitchell refused to accept in the end led to his undoing. Watch the video to see what actually transpired.

Ultimately, this story is about the age-old meeting of man and nature, and the ability of humans to conceive and accept change.
